New Gear Oil Viscosity Grades: SAE 65, 70 and 75 In February 2019, the SAE J306 standard – that sets the limits for gear oil viscosity grades – has been updated. Three new viscosity grades – SAE 65, 70 and 75 – were introduced and the limits for grade SAE 80 have been adjusted to tighten the broad kinematic viscosity window that previously existed.

The SAE wanted a system that reflected the suitability of an oil for use as an engine lubricant and was easy for the consumer to understand. Their initial specification defined five different numbered grades for motor oil (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50). The The differences in viscosity of an SAE 20 and SAE 5 oil relative to being poured on the same angled surface. Conversely, the aforementioned AW-68 hydraulic oil has an ISO VG rating of 68 this, in turn, allows it to be classified as a single-grade lubricant, or straight-grade oil. SAE measures oil at 100ºC. Oil gets thinner according to its Viscosity Index, and the chart is calculated with a specific Viscosity Index (VI 95 default) The chart assumes the oil has a Viscosity Index of 95. This is a good approximation for most oils, but will lead to a small error when converting between ISO/AGMA and SAE for high Viscosity Index oils. Comparative Viscosity Chart Download the Chart Here! There are several ways to designate the viscosity grades of lubricants: SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) grades for automotive engine and gear oils, AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association) for industrial gear lubricants, SUS (Saybolt Universal Seconds), cSt (kinematic viscosity in centistokes), and absolute viscosity.

The viscosity SAE 50 is designed for use in air- cooled engines and for motorcycles. It can also be used in the event of overheating problems or increa- sed oil  The low temperature cranking viscosity is one of the four basic viscosity measurements in SAE J300 which defines the rules around engine oil viscosity grades. Viscosity is the most important property governing the functions of a fluid and a measure For automotive lubricants, empirical SAE Viscosity Classification ( SAE If the second measured in this way is converted according to the tabl Multi-grade oils could stay as close to the optimum viscosity over a range of temperatures – not too thick when it is cold and not too thin when it is hot. The chart to the right will show you how to convert between different standards. Conversion chart » The SAE classification (SAE J300) has proven 11 viscosity grades. Six of them are recognized as winter grades with a “W” designation. The eleven viscosity grades are: 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 25W.

On the left of the chart you can see it has Kinematic viscosities of roughly 145 cSt at 4 0°C and 14 cSt at 100°C and, on the right side of the chart, Saybolt viscosities of 700 SUS at 100°F and 75 SUS at 210°F.

SAE J300 has established eleven viscosity grades, of which six are considered Winter-grades and given a W designation. The 11 viscosity grades are 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, 25W, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60.

Multigrade oils must fulfill two viscosity specifications, their viscosity grade consists of two numbers, e.g. 10W-40: 10W refers to the low-temperature viscosity ("Winter"), 40 refers to SAE 75w, 80w, 85, 5w, & 10w specified at low temperature. Equivalent viscosities for 100° & 210°F are shown SAE 90 to 250 and 20 to 50 specified at 100°C. ISO viscosity classification system Many petroleum products are graded according to the ISO Viscosity Classification System, approved by the international standards organization (ISO). Several organizations (ISO, SAE, AGMA) have created competing standards to define oil viscosity ranges, but most of them mean the same thing. The chart to the right will show you how to convert between different standards.
